October in Macclesfield has two anchors on the calendar. Treacle Market fills Market Place on Sunday 25 October, and the Macc Big Bang at the rugby club on Friday 6 November is the town’s big fireworks night, with tickets already on sale. In between come four Macclesfield FC home games, a run of workshops at the Silk Museum, half-term crafts and a ghost walk, and the town council’s Spooky Saturday on 31 October.

  • Macclesfield and The Bayeux, on now to Saturday 19 December, Silk Museum opening hours (Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm), Park Lane, SK11 6TJ. Free, drop-in. The town’s own Macclesfield History Tapestry, stitched by about 100 people, shown with the British Museum’s Story of the Bayeux display as part of Bayeux Around Britain (The Silk Museum).
  • Unveiling the Cartwright & Sheldon Archive, on now to Saturday 31 October at the Silk Museum. Free, drop-in. Silk samples, mid-century fabrics and point paper designs from the town’s last handloom weavers, untouched for over 40 years (The Silk Museum).
  • Wilmslow Art Under One Roof, Friday 2 October 6pm to 8pm, Saturday 3 October 10am to 5pm and Sunday 4 October 12pm to 4pm, URC Church Halls, Chapel Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 1PR. Free admission. Wilmslow’s contemporary art fair of North West artists, makers and potters (Wilmslow Art).
  • Macclesfield Stripe Dyeing and Weaving Workshop, Saturday 3 October, 10am to 4.30pm, Silk Museum. £80, ages 18 and over. Dye silk ribbons with natural dyes, weave them on a frame loom and stitch the cloth into a pouch, with a look at the museum’s Macclesfield Stripe collection (The Silk Museum).
  • Macclesfield FC v Scarborough Athletic, Saturday 3 October, 3pm, Leasing.com Stadium, London Road, SK11 7SP. An Emirates FA Cup tie at home (Macclesfield FC).
  • Shop & Eat Local Weekend, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, Tatton Park, Knutsford, WA16 6QN. A menu of Tatton Estate produce in the Stables Restaurant, with tastings and estate products for sale in the Housekeeper’s Store (Tatton Park).
  • Macclesfield Male Voice Choir concert for Hope Central, Saturday 3 October, 7.30pm, St Bartholomew’s Church, Wilmslow, SK9 4AA. Admission by donation at the door, with £10 suggested. Show tunes plus traditional and modern pieces, with guests BackBeat A Cappella, for the local charity Hope Central (Wilmslow Town Council).
  • Apple Day, Sunday 4 October, Tatton Park. Apple activities and tastings of different varieties in the gardens, with the garden team and volunteers (Tatton Park).

  • Tai Chi, Saturday 10 October, 1pm to 1.30pm, Silk Museum. Free, no booking. Part of the Macclesfield World Harvest Festival; the museum says the festival’s main event is at the United Reformed Church from 2pm (The Silk Museum).

  • Postcards from the Silk Road: Hidden codes and Connections, Wednesday 4 to Saturday 21 November, Paradise Mill at the Silk Museum. Included in a Paradise Mill ticket; guided tours run daily at 11am and 12.15pm. The Macclesfield artist J R Oatts’s final MA show, abstract works set among the mill’s looms and artefacts (The Silk Museum).

  • Dorset buttons, Tuesday 10 November, 1pm to 3pm, Silk Museum. £20, ages 18 and over (The Silk Museum).
  • Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November. A short service outside Macclesfield Town Hall, beginning just before 11am for the two-minute silence (Macclesfield Town Council).
