Macclesfield has no switch-on ceremony. Step Into Christmas runs 11am to 5pm on Saturday 28 November, free. Wilmslow's switch-on is Saturday 21 November.

If you are searching for the Macclesfield Christmas lights switch-on, the honest answer is that there is not one. There has been no countdown, no big switch and no town centre fireworks since 2019, and Macclesfield Town Council is not bringing them back this year either.

What the town does instead is Step Into Christmas, a free daytime event in Market Place. The council has confirmed the 2026 date: Saturday 28 November, 11am to 5pm (Macclesfield Town Council).

Visit Macclesfield, which runs the listing on the council’s behalf, spells it out: “There will not be an official switch on or fireworks this year, so no need to wait to come into town.”

What is confirmed for 28 November

The council’s own event page is short. It promises live music curated by Choose Macc on the Silk FM stage, walkabout acts and workshops, and then says: “Check back closer to the day for the full schedule.”

So the date and the hours are firm. The line-up is not.

Two other things on the same day are confirmed by their own organisers:

  • The Made in Macclesfield makers market is in Macclesfield Town Hall, 10.45am to 4.15pm, free entry, timed to coincide with Step Into Christmas (Made in Macclesfield).
  • The Christmas Treacle Market takes over Market Place the following day, Sunday 29 November, 10am to 3.30pm.

More on both on our Macclesfield Christmas markets page.

A warning about the running order you will find online

Search for Step Into Christmas and you will land on Visit Macclesfield’s 2026 listing, which reads as a full schedule: a welcome from the Mayor at 11am, Macclesfield Youth Brass Band around the tree from 11.30am to 12.30pm, live music from 12.30pm, stilt-walkers and jugglers through the afternoon, festive buttonhole making with HomeStead Grown inside the Town Hall, the Father Christmas parade from 3pm and a sing-along to finish at 5pm.

That is last year’s running order. The two schedule images embedded on that same page are captioned, in the page’s own code, “Macclesfield Step Into Christmas 2025 Lineup” and “Step Into Christmas Macclesfield 2025 Band List”, and the page signs off by telling readers to look out for the “lineup of events coming in 2026”. The date at the top has been changed. The detail underneath has not.

The shape will probably be similar. But nothing below the date and the 11am to 5pm window is confirmed for 2026, and the council says as much.

Why the switch-on went

Macclesfield used to hold a proper one. The town council described it in 2021 as “a cold November day, huddled together in the Market Place, musical acts on the stage and the countdown to the tree lighting up, lights down Mill Street and Chestergate coming on, and the fireworks going off”, drawing over 3,000 people into Market Place and 10,000 through the town centre across the day.

It was cancelled in 2020 and again in 2021 on covid grounds, the council saying it would “not be appropriate or sensible” to pack the Market Place (Nub News, 15 October 2021). Step Into Christmas was the scaled-back replacement, and it is what stayed.

The switch-ons that do still happen nearby

Town Event 2026 date Status
Macclesfield Step Into Christmas (no switch-on) Sat 28 Nov, 11am to 5pm Date confirmed, line-up TBC
Wilmslow Christmas Lights switch-on Sat 21 Nov Date confirmed, line-up TBC
Poynton Santa’s Sleigh (street collection) December, dates TBC Not yet announced

Wilmslow is the nearest thing to a traditional switch-on in the district. Wilmslow Town Council has confirmed Saturday 21 November 2026 and says only “save the date” (Wilmslow Town Council). The council funds the lights and organises the event, which it says “usually takes place on the third Saturday in November” and normally features a live reindeer parade before a staged switch-on near Bank Square.

The 2025 edition ran markets on Alderley Road from 10am, free lantern making on Hawthorn Lane from noon, stage acts at Bank Square from 2pm and the switch-on at about 5pm. The reindeer did not appear: the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd was kept away by government restrictions on animal movement during the bluetongue outbreak, and the town council said it was not prepared to compromise on welfare.

Poynton Round Table runs Santa’s Sleigh around the village streets every December, collecting for local causes, but has not published 2026 dates.

Practical notes

Market Place is pedestrianised, so the closest parking is the town centre car parks rather than anything on the square itself. Charges in Cheshire East car parks run 8am to 10pm seven days a week, though the Town Hall’s larger area is free after 5pm on weekdays. Full tariffs are on our parking in Macclesfield page, and anything dug up between now and then will show on our roadworks and travel page.
