A 21-year-old Macclesfield woman died in a crash at the Alderley Roundabout on the A34 at 1am on Friday. The driver fled on foot. Police want dashcam footage.

A 21-year-old woman from Macclesfield has died after a crash on the A34 Alderley Edge bypass in the early hours of Friday 9 October.

Cheshire Police were called at around 1am to a collision at the Alderley Roundabout on the A34 Melrose Way. The force says the crash involved a black Mazda, and that the driver had fled the scene on foot by the time officers arrived. (Cheshire Police)

What the police have said

Three passengers were still in the car. Paramedics treated all three at the scene. The force’s statement says:

  • a 21-year-old woman from Macclesfield, a rear seat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene
  • a 34-year-old woman from Macclesfield was taken to hospital
  • a 36-year-old man from Macclesfield was taken to hospital
  • a 36-year-old man from Macclesfield was later arrested nearby on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving

The force says the woman’s next of kin have been told and are being supported by specialist officers. It has not named her. When the statement was published at 2.27pm on Friday, one man was being held in custody.

An arrest is not a charge. The force says its enquiries into the cause of the collision are ongoing.

Detective Sergeant Russ Sime, of the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a young woman has sadly lost her life and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.”

The appeal: where the car was heading

Police believe the Mazda was travelling on the A34 from Wilmslow towards Monks Heath. That is the southbound run along the bypass, past Alderley Edge, to the roundabout at Nether Alderley.

Detectives want to hear from:

  • anyone who was in the area and saw the collision
  • anyone with dashcam footage of it
  • anyone who thinks they saw the black Mazda in the run-up to the crash

“The A34 is a busy road,” DS Sime said, “and as part of our investigation, we’re keen to hear from anyone who was in the area.”

What it means for you

If you drove the A34 between Wilmslow and Monks Heath late on Thursday 8 October or in the first hour of Friday, check your dashcam before it records over the journey. Footage from the run-up matters as much as the crash itself.

Call Cheshire Police on 101, or use the force’s online form, quoting IML 2434307.

A second appeal this week

On Wednesday the force also said that a 68-year-old Macclesfield woman, hit by a DPD delivery van on Coare Street near the Westminster Road junction on Tuesday 8 September, died of her injuries on Thursday 24 September. She had been flown to Salford Royal Hospital by air ambulance.

Her family, in a statement issued through the police, asked for privacy and understanding. The force says the van driver, a 24-year-old man from Shelton, remains on bail and its enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information or video footage of that collision is asked to call 101 or report online, quoting IML-2413238. (Cheshire Police)
